I was asked to design tarot cards that depicted a pre-determined list of words and included a child protagonist. Instead of illustrating them literally I wanted to convey them via a narrative and underlying concept so they would appear more interesting and less clichéd.
Honey is depicted by a spoilt queen bee gorging on the delicious produce of her minions. My intention was to put a grotesque spin on power, showing that too much of it isn’t always as appealing as one might assume.
Brittleness is expressed through a boy who has the ability to turn everything he touches into ice, leaving them to shatter into tiny fragile pieces.
