As with most 90′s kids, Pokémon was a huge part of my childhood and I wanted to do some sort of tribute to help maintain/learn new painting skills whilst updating my portfolio. They’ll mainly be interpretations of how I perceived them to be when I was a child.

Click on their names to view WIPs from my blog.

———————————————————————————————————-

Rapidash

My main fire-type Pokémon. I always liked Rapidash until a friend put me off by calling it an “overgrown version of My Little Pony”….so I made it my mission to make it look cool~

Gengar

Gengar was one of my strongest Pokémon. Looking back at the original design he actually looks quite round and cute but as a child I thought he was more cheeky and menacing.

Venusaur

When I was little, I didn’t like the look of Ivysaur and Venusaur so I kept him as Bulbasaur until level 60 ’cause he was cuter. In the end, I let him evolve so complete my Pokédex and because their stats tend to increase after evolving (I think?). This is why he’s so grumpy-looking!

Instead of illustrating them literally I wanted to convey them via a narrative and underlying concept so they would appear more interesting and less clichéd.

Honey is depicted by a spoilt queen bee gorging on the delicious produce of her minions. My intention was to put a grotesque spin on power, showing that too much of it isn’t always as appealing as one might assume.

Brittleness is expressed through a boy who has the ability to turn everything he touches into ice, leaving them to shatter into tiny fragile pieces.

I wanted her to be a tough but feminine protagonist who would be appealing to both male and female audiences.

For this I compiled a game-style booklet containing the developmental processes for the character designs and background story.
